IB conducts 4 assessments for Spanish Ab Initio. These are divided into external and internal assessments:
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Weighting: 75%
External assessments are taken at the school and graded by IB examiners worldwide. A teacher may only prepare students for this assessment but does not see the exam paper before the students and does not grade the assessment.
I. Paper 1
Time: 1h30mn
Weighting: 30%
Understanding of 4 written texts + Text handling exercises (40 marks)
II. Paper 2
Time: 1hr00mn
Weighting: 25%
Two compulsory writing exercises (25 marks)
* Section A (7 marks): One question to be answered from a choice of two.
* Section B (18 marks) One question to be answered from a choice of three.
III. Written Assignment
Weighting: 20%
A piece of independent writing work of 200-350 words by the student, demonstrating intercultural understanding and word processed in the target language.
The topic of this independent work is chosen with guidance from the teacher and must fall under one of the following categories:
- Individual and Society
- Leisure and Work
- Urban and Rural Environment
Research for the student's work may only start in 12th grade. (20 marks)
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Weighting: 25%
The internal assessment is taken at the school and assessed by the student's teacher. However, this grade and a recording of the assessment are sent to IB examiners worldwide by the end of the course. IB examiners might review the assessment grade provided by the teacher. (25 marks)
IV. Individual Oral
Time: 10 minutes
The oral assessment consists of 3 parts:
* Presentation of an image by the student (from a choice of 2).
* Follow-up questions on the image selected.
* General conversation including at least two questions on the written assignment (please refer to External Assessments above).
